EcoBot Challenge Logo I saw the most amazing thing - kids learned more in two hours than in two months.

How 2010
Challenge Worked

Considering participating in 2011? Download the 2010 Ecobot rules, illustrated robotics guide and marketing guide to get a feeling for how the contest works. Each year, however, the tasks change to ensure previous participants don't have an unfair advantage.

Robot Challenge

Tasks
Robots will be required to perform a series of tasks related to the environment. In 2009, students had to sort trash into different bins for recycling, take “compost” to a garden, reduce energy usage by turning off a light bulb, and reduce the volume of trash taken to a landfill by compacting it. In 2010, the tasks focused on energy efficiency and alternative sources of energy.

Field
Each task must be performed on a 3’ x 5’ field fenced at the edge by 1” white PVC pipe. The contest “field” will be identical for all students in all rounds of the competition. Shown here: last year’s field.

Robot
All robots must be made from the LEGO® MINDSTORMS® Education NXT Robot Kit. Your robot must fit within a 12” x 16” x 16” area called “Home”; each robot may use up to three motors, two light sensors, two touch sensors and one ultrasonic sensor, but no more. You may use other Lego® elements to construct your robot.

You may also use up to one sheet of letter-size white paper (8.5” x 11”), 4” x 4” of cardboard and four inches of either clear tape or masking tape measuring no more than 3/4” wide.
